Meet Bonnie - Visualizing Chinese Immigration

Meet Bonnie

Meet the People

Bonnie came to America through marriage. Her husband is a Hong Kong immigrant to the U.S. During one summer, her husband came back to Hong Kong and met Bonnie. Bonnie had a part-time degree from the Chinese University in Hong Kong. She worked for different departments in Hong Kong government before coming to America.

Coming to America was a big decision for her, which meant that she had to give up everything she had in Hong Kong. At that time, she was doing well at her workplace and got promoted several times. For her marriage, she gave up her job and went to America. Driving a car, adapting to American ways of living and language were extremely difficult for her. She went to America in 1990. She decided to take lessons and find a job. Less than one year she came, she got pregnant which messed up all her plan.

She adjusted to the life based on what was in her hands at that time. When she was pregnant, she put her focus on taking care of the child. When she did not know how to drive, she forced herself to learn driving and drove to work by herself.

Her husband was a tough and not socially adequate person. Her marriage life gave her lots of difficulties. Thanks to the fact that she is an independent woman, she managed her life well.

At the workplace, she had to learn lots of things from her colleagues. She didn’t know how to use coffee machine or copy machine. When her son brought home a school project to make brownie, She couldn’t help her son do this project because she did not have brownie before.

She had many complains on her life in the US. However, she believed she managed to push herself through every difficulty and set up her new life in the US.
