About the Author

Seattle, WA, Summer of 2018

Shiqi Xie is the author/designer behind this website. She is a writer, web designer and digital storyteller based in Durham, NC (Soon to be San Francisco, CA). Originated from Guangzhou, China, she is better known as Kira by her colleagues and friends. She received her Master of Arts in Digital Art History/Computational Media in the Department of Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke University. Her thesis research, “Reimagining Model Minority: An Inquiry into the Post-1965 Chinese Immigration in the United States”, elaborates on the idea of Model Minority and investigate into the current states of Chinese society in the U.S. through a statistical analysis and oral history.

Based on her thesis, this website “Visualizing Chinese Immigration” seeks to raise the awareness of the history and contemporary issues of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. The website was built on WordPress by the Elegant theme. this website is not only a digital version of the thesis, but a container of information in multiple forms. It allows the user to understand the thesis without having to read the thesis in a linear fashion and invite the user to experience the thesis in a horizontal way.
